Panagia Faneromeni Chapel in Nea Skioni
Panagia Faneromeni Chapel is a small seaside church located about 2 km from Nea Skioni, on the Kassandra peninsula of Halkidiki. Built in the 16th century, the chapel stands beside the coastal road, almost directly on the shore, and is one of the area's distinctive religious landmarks.
The chapel is known for its surviving wall paintings and for an icon of the Virgin Mary that is painted on an upright marble base from an ancient statue. According to local tradition, the icon was found floating in the sea and is considered miraculous. Stories surrounding the icon have been passed down through generations and remain an important part of the chapel's religious tradition.
The Miraculous Icon and Local Tradition
According to local tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary is said to shed tears before major misfortunes occur in Greece. It is traditionally said to have wept before the Second World War, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, and more recently during the political dispute over the name of the neighbouring country then known as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
These stories form part of the local religious tradition surrounding Panagia Faneromeni and help explain the chapel's importance as a place of pilgrimage.
Historic Features and Frescoes
Inside the chapel is an ancient funerary monument dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD, associated with the burial of a child named Markos Ioulios. The monument is believed to have originated from ancient Skione, the ancient settlement that once stood in the wider area.
The interior also contains wall paintings of folk artistic character, as well as a text referring to miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary. The chapel has been officially designated a protected historic monument, reflecting its religious and historical significance.
Weddings and Baptisms
Set directly beside the sea, Panagia Faneromeni is also used for weddings and baptisms, particularly during the summer months. Anyone wishing to arrange a religious ceremony should contact the appropriate ecclesiastical authority in advance to confirm availability and the required arrangements.
The chapel is associated with the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the religious tradition of the Theological School of Halki. The Monastery of Agia Anastasia is also mentioned by ecclesiastical sources in connection with the site.
Panagia Faneromeni celebrates its annual feast on 23 August, the Feast of the Apodosis of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, when religious services are held and worshippers from Nea Skioni and the surrounding area gather at the chapel.
